[vernalpool] More wood frog movement - Waterford, VA

Last night I was coming home from a great birding experience (Northern
Harriers followed by Short-eared Owls hunting a nearby field). It had rained
during the day and was in the 50s. As the sun set, a serious front rolled
through - temps dropped and wind really picked up - so much so that spotting
scopes were almost blown over, it was that kind of wind.

As I drove home, at 6:30pm.with no rain and big winds, I got to a 4-way
intersection where there are known sink hole vernal pools. As I rolled to
the stop, I saw that familiar sign..not leaves blowing across the street but
frogs hopping - my heart dropped. And they were all female wood frogs,
gravid-as-gravid can be.

While this is a "back road" of sorts, the traffic was constant and it was
"rush" hour. I put on my hazard lights and jumped into road crossing assist
mode. Didn't expect this on a no-rain night and didn't have the tel numbers
to call in help. It all lasted about 40 minutes.

Their skin was pretty dry from the wind so I tried to wet them a bit from a
clean puddle to help a little as they continued on their way.

Not only does this feel a few weeks early for our wood frogs, I was also
surprised to see movement without the rain

Spring has sprung!

Yes! In Newbury. Temps 41 to 43F and pouring cats and dogs. Rain started about 7pm
I crossed one wood frog at 8:30 and observed one dead wf at 9:20 p.m.
Individuals were observed at two different pools.

I've been checking every day and nothing yet in Beacon Falls, CT. It has been warm - this morning hit 56 at the pool. Rain is coming in this evening and tomorrow. I can't wait to see who is on the move.

Very interesting discussion folks, thanks for sharing.

In NJ, my personal experience with both spotted salamander and wood frog movements (admittedly not well chronicled) is that since 2000, initial movements (so sometimes just males) was never observed earlier than March 5, and never later that March 24. Seems to me like on average, movement in NJ occurs the second week in March, is associated with relatively heavy rainfall, and often followed one or two previous nighttime rainfall events which had us wondering, but nothing ever happened (indicative of another relevant variable ~ such as the soil temps noted previously not having been suitable yet or - I used to wonder - simply "time of year"). I recall the March 5 event was a warm season like this year, and that year no precipitation event was involved, just ridiculously warm temps w/ thawed ground conditions. They got tired of waiting ...

Last week a consultant reported observing several spotteds already on the surface, beneath a log, and a few days later he had one crossing a road at a migration road closure site, under relatively unimpressive rainfall conditions. Wont be long ...

There had been heavy snowmelt the night before and a 75 degree sunny day preceding the influx of salamanders that night.

For what it's worth, the average date for first migrants at my study pool from the last nine years is March 17 for Jefferson salamanders and March 29 for spotted.

Cliff's Notes version from Sexton's study:

Primary Condition
3 day mean temperature of 41.9° F / 5.5° C
Soil temperature @ 30 cm greater than 39.2° F / 2.13° C
At least 0.16 inches / 0.4 cm of rainfall
A reversal of the soil temperature profile (surface is warmer than sub-surface)

Secondary Condition
3 day mean temperature of 35.8° F / 2.13° C
Soil temperature @ 30 cm greater than 37.4° F / 3° C
At least 0.16 inches / 0.4 cm of rainfall

I tested Sexton's criteria in Upstate NY from 2003 through 2010 and the same conditions on my study population of spotted salamanders followed exactly in all years but one, which I think was 2005 where we never got any warm days in March. But the inversion of soil temps seemed to be the key. The 2005 exception was when we had equalization of soil temps at the surface and 30 cm. Oddly, rainfall was not always a necessary component. I was out one night that was dry and you could hear the rustling of leaves all over the forest surrounding the pool as salamanders made their way in. There had been heavy snowmelt the night before and a 75 degree sunny day preceding the influx of salamanders that night.

Sexton's criteria never worked with Jeffersons. Had some migration events that I couldn't figure how they got through frost, let alone ice cover on the pools.

For what it's worth, the average date for first migrants at my study pool from the last nine years is March 17 for Jefferson salamanders and March 29 for spotted.

All good questions! Jane, I seem to think that wouldn't be a problem.
They don't hibernate, just get torpid, so I expect they'd be able to
respond to thermal stress by moving lower if it did become a problem. But
if there's no hard frost in the ground, they're probably in good shape in
any regard. I suspect some others on the list may have better insight than
the seat-of-the-pants guess I'm making...

Shep, I don't recall the work you mentioned, but that might just be age
throwing an elbow. Anyone else know if that work's been done? Think of
all of the Ph.D. projects!!

The European Commission, playing Pontius Pilate, has just announced its intent to ask the European Court of Justice (ECJ) for an opinion on the conformity of ACTA with fundamental freedoms. Beyond the obvious intent to defuse the heated debate currently taking place, this move aims to make the ACTA discussion a mere legal issue, when the main concerns are political by nature. http://venitism.blogspot.com

Giving ACTA to blogbusters is giving gin to alcoholics! While the EU Commission has consistently refused to undergo an impact assessment of ACTA on fundamental freedoms, it is now scared of the growing citizen opposition to ACTA and has decided to buy time.

Even if the the ECJ referral text has not been published yet, its announced framing is narrow and legalistic in nature. La Quadrature du Net says important questions will not be asked, and therefore be left unanswered:

* Can a wide-ranging interpretation of ACTA's criminal sanctions for infringement on a commercial scale, including aiding and abetting, be used as a bullying weapon by the copyright industry to force Internet actors into deploying contract-based repressive measures?

* What will be the impact on EU policy-making and public debate of casting in stone current repressive policies for which an impact study is still expected, and which are heavily criticized (such as the EUCD and IPRED)?

* Can such a body of policies, impacting EU policy-making, the free flow of information and the freedom to conduct business on the Internet be negotiated instead of democratically debated, and yet be legitimate?

* Is ACTA necessary as we are facing an open conflict between repressive copyright policies and fundamental freedoms, and that other paths could be taken, such as a positive reform taking into account new cultural practices?

EFF muses that if there's one thing that encapsulates what's wrong with the way government functions today, ACTA is it. You wouldn't know it from the name, but the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement is a plurilateral agreement designed to broaden and extend existing intellectual property enforcement laws to the Internet. While it was only negotiated between a few countries, it has global consequences. First because it will create new rules for the Internet, and second, because its standards will be applied to other countries through the U.S.'s annual Special 301 process.

Philippe Aigrain of La Quadrature du Net points out the European Commission asks the wrong questions, because it is afraid of getting the right answers. It tries to prevent the Court from assessing ACTA's impact on fundamental rights having regard to how it will interact with existing EU law and the announced revisions of the IPRED and Online Services directives. With this wider perspective, ACTA's harmful effects on fundamental rights become so obvious that a referral is not even needed.

Jeremie Zimmermann of La Quadrature du Net asserts ACTA is dangerous because it aims at circumventing democracy, and because its vague wording can be interpreted in so many repressive ways by the signatories and judges. The Commission seems afraid that the heated ACTA debate and the growing recognition that the present system is broken will lead to a highly needed copyright reform for the benefit of art, culture and innovation in the digital era. No legal debate can fix ACTA or give it a legitimacy that by design it cannot have.

What we really need is any rain for these critters - many of the vernal pools do not have much water in them. A little bit first would be great before a deluge that gets them to move.

Venizelos has managed to fool Eurogroup again! Eurogroup has sealed a second bailout for Greece, but it cannot revive anything due to huge political corruption, kangaroo justice, and persecution of dissident bloggers.

Eurokleptocrats are losing touch with reality. Greece is broke, and yet Brussels wants to send Graecokleptocrats billions in new loans. This is understandable, given that abandoning portions of their claims against Greece would translate into substantial losses. But cutting losses short is the golden rule of markets.

After 13 hours of talks, finance ministers had finalized measures to cut Greece's debt to 120.5 percent of gross domestic product by 2020. Graecokleptocrats have a long history of promising reforms and not delivering, and this time is no different. After decades of using public services as political spoils, Graecokleptocrats must also take on the corruption and inefficiency they fostered before they can implement the reforms that creditors demand before releasing further funds. http://venitism.blogspot.com

Agreement on the 130-billion-euro rescue package, subject to strict conditions, cannot avert an imminent Greek bankruptcy. The failure of the rescue plan is due to slow implementation of structural reforms, such as the opening up of markets and professions and reducing political corruption. There is widespread skepticism because of a long history of missed targets. Papademos is lying and scaremongering.

If Graecokleptocrats did not follow through on reforms, Greece's debt could hit 160 percent by 2020. Given the risks, the Greek program may thus remain accident-prone, with questions about sustainability hanging over it. Every time Graecokleptocrats have to receive a tranche of the money we're going to have the same problem. If they keep missing targets, sooner or later they won't get the money. There is a chance this is just delaying the inevitable. Graecokleptocrats have repeatedly voted in measures and privatizations that have never materialized. It is proving a Herculean task.

The accord will enable Graecokleptocrats to launch a bond swap with private investors to help reduce and restructure its vast debts, put it on a more stable financial footing and keep it inside eurozone. Around 100 billion euros of debt will be written off as banks and insurers swap bonds for longer bonds that pay a lower coupon, but not many will take the deal.

Hedge funds, pissed off by my persecution, refuse to accept any haircut on Greek government bonds of blogbusters. Bondholders are hoodwinked to give up some 100 billion euros of their investment in the pseudovoluntary bond swap, but hedge funds will not participate, case closed, pure and simple. But ratcheting up pressure on hedge funds, Premier Papademos declares he will consider legislation forcing creditors to take losses on their holdings.

One way to force hedge funds could come by way of the Grand Brothel on Syntagma Square. It could pass legislation forcing private lenders to accept a debt reduction. Fourth Reich and IMF are desperate to avoid passage of such a law, which is a declaration of a disorderly default.

Whatever its constituent parts, the deal may only delay a deeper default by a few months. A turnaround in the economy could take as much as a decade. A turnaround in political corruption will never materialize! Blogbusters galore! Freak! Freak! Freak! The freakish government of Greece, the most corrupt country in Occident, steals computers! Robbing dissident bloggers and locking them in jail is a freakish behavior that does not belong to the European Union, not even to this galaxy! No wonder some vain Greeks boast they come from Andromeda galaxy!

A new Greek government will not stick to the deeply unpopular program after elections due in April, and Graecokleptocrats will again fall behind in implementation. That will prompt lenders to pull the plug once eurozone has stronger financial firewalls in place.

There are big doubts in Northern Europeans that Graecokleptocrats will be able to meet their commitments. Graecokleptocrats' program is already hopelessly behind schedule, in terms of both the sale of government property and the agreed reforms. It's like dealing with children that constantly have to be told to clean up their rooms. Troika is very angry. Everyone is irritated over the lack of progress of Graecokleptocrats.

The private creditor bond exchange is expected to launch on March 8 and complete three days later. A 14.5-billion-euro bond repayment due on March 20 would be restructured, allowing Graecokleptocrats to avoid default.

The vast majority of the funds in the 130-billion-euro program will be used to finance the bond swap and ensure Greece's banking system remains stable. 30 billion euros will go to sweeteners to get the private sector to sign up to the swap. 23 billion euros will go to recapitalize Greek banks.

A further 35 billion or so will allow Graecokleptocrats to finance the buying back of the bonds. Nothing will go directly to help the Greek economy. This deal will not end Graecokleptocrats's problems. Greece's economy shrank 7 percent year-on-year in the last quarter of 2011, much more than expected.

Christine Lagarde of IMF has made it absolutely clear she does not trust Graecokleptocrats, because they never apply what they vote in the Grand Brothel on Syntagma Square! All Europeans condemn Graecokleptocrats for creating hundred state agencies and hiring many thousands of public employees, even though they promised Troika to close down all agencies and fire many public employees. Some executives at state enterprises have annual salaries of 300,000 euros! Greeks wonder why the bank accounts of rich ministers have not been opened and why major tax evaders have not been arrested.

Empowering patients as key decision makers must be the foundation of any health system. Karen McKeown points out the current trend of rapidly rising health care costs is unsustainable. A better alternative would be to allow individual consumers to make their own decisions about care, including the self-rationing of medical services, based on cost and their own desires. Such a policy is compatible with libertarian values of limited government and individual liberty and responsibility. State and federal policymakers should adopt measures to facilitate personal control of health care decisions.

McKeown notes health care costs are consuming ever larger portions of the gross domestic product (GDP). There is broad bipartisan agreement on the need to control these rising costs and to control federal entitlement spending in general, including spending on the giant health care entitlements Medicare and Medicaid. http://venitism.blogspot.com

However, the standard approach to limiting federal health care spending is to limit federal payments for medical goods and services. This limitation, in itself, is a form of health care rationing. In fact, rationing of one form or another is already a routine feature of public and private health insurance arrangements, although it is often covert, opaque, or subtle in its implementation.

For policymakers and the public, the basic question is not whether there should be rationing in health care: It already exists. Economics itself is an exercise in rationing among goods and services because limited resources cannot purchase unlimited goods. The crucial question is: Who should make the rationing decisions?

McKeown says citizens value personal liberty and self-rule, libertarian values at the heart of political culture. Given these values, Americans have consistently resisted any health care proposals that threaten to undermine these principles as they understand them. Although they acknowledge the problem of health care spending, including rising government spending, Americans are unlikely to accept rationing decisions made by a European-style pseudoindependent body or an unaccountable government agency. Instead, policymakers should seek a libertarian solution that enables individual patients to make the key decisions about their care in accordance with their own preferences, beliefs, and values. This is especially important in decisions relating to end-of-life care.

McKeown asserts that to achieve this level of patient engagement, policymakers must reduce or eliminate barriers to patient decision making, including patient ignorance of and insulation from the true costs of care, the lack of information on medical prices and options, and medical malpractice and inadequate skills among doctors and nurses and other medical professionals in dealing with an engaged patient.

Policymakers need to make the health care sector far more transparent. They can do this by promoting a free market for health insurance coverage in which prices and the content of insurance are clear and transparent; creating an information-driven system of choice to enable patients to better understand the range of available benefits and services; enacting medical malpractice reform in the states where it is sorely needed; and encouraging better education of medical professionals to prepare them to communicate more effectively and clearly with all patients, including those facing a long illness or the end of life itself.

[vernalpool] Fairy shrimp!

So I was at my son's house this afternoon in Bridgewater and checked out the 'puddle' in his backyard....and lo and behold, fairy shrimp! Made me realize it's time to put the vernal pool 'accessories' back in my car. Photos of shrimp in a clear Dunkin Donuts cup are embarrassing....This 'puddle' was almost dried up so hope rains come soon for those guys.

I got attached to a few rabbits and let them wander though the acreage
instead of culling them..... going into the 2010 winter and OMGoodness....
we had bobcats show up that we didn't know we had! They had NO fear of us
humans either. I shot at one to scare it (semi automatic) and it FINALLY
slowly trotted away. I was within 20 feet of it!
We had secured our birds for the winter from the total devastated loss our
first winter so once these bobcats came in, we couldn't stop them.
No more loose rabbits for us! Not only that, the bobcats kill our other
livestock AND our cats. Our cats also killed the baby rabbits... not the
desired results! After that our barn cats wanted to eat the rabbits in the
hutches. So in the end, not a good idea and we had to get rid of the
bobcats.
The guy across the street has had alot of "domestic" rabbits running loose
for many years (prior caretakers released them), thought they are depleting
now with the bobcat population expanding due to "easy' prey. Not a good
idea for predator areas.
Agreed Stephanie, I am not inadvertently feeding the wildlife anymore, I am
feeding my dogs & my family only ;-)

Before you release rabbits, you might consider the devastating effect that could have on your neighbor's gardens.

Perhaps you might introduce them to your freezer instead? Rabbits are delicious, nutritious, and low fat protein.

Medical advances have created longer lives and sometimes, ironically, longer and more torturous deaths. The World Federation of Right to Die Societies is aware of the increasing concern to many individuals over their right to die with dignity. Believing in the rights and freedom of all persons, they affirm this right to die with dignity, meaning in peace and without suffering.

All competent adults - regardless of their nationalities, professions, religious beliefs, and ethical and political views - who are suffering unbearably from incurable illnesses should have the possibility of various choices at the end of their life. Death is unavoidable. We strongly believe that the manner and time of dying should be left to the decision of the individual. The most popular euthanasia substance on the market is Nembutal, an acronym for Na (sodium) + ethyl + methyl + butyl + al (common suffix for barbiturates). Most people buy pills of Nembutal, the peaceful pills, on internet. However, Dignitas uses an oral dose of an anti-emetic drug, followed approximately 30 minutes later by a lethal overdose of 15 grams of powdered nembutal dissolved in a glass of water or fruit juice.

The nembutal overdose depresses the central nervous system, causing the person to become drowsy and fall asleep within 10 minutes of taking it. Many patients want their doctors to help them end their life with dignity,
because they can no longer tolerate their suffering. There are situations in
which it isn't just ethically justified, but in which doctors have a duty to do
this. There are myriad situations in which a doctor is called upon to relieve

to conduct this in the manner in which the patient wants. In this sense, the
doctor should see assisted suicide as a kind of palliative measure.

great benefits to humanity, it cannot entirely solve the pain and distress of

First I would check with the local wildlife management to see why there are
no rabbits. If it is ok to reintroduce they may be able to point you in the right direction. There may be a reason they are gone. If there is
no know reason why the rabbits have dissapeared then by all means try
it. Rabbits need a food source, water, and cover in the wild, if one is missing then so will the rabbits. If you know of someone who catches
them then see if they will give you let you buy some to repopulate your area .. it

Dropping out of school is a smart strategy of cutting losses short! Public schools are filled with eager, fresh-faced youngsters, and prisons contain many rough-looking adults with uninviting personalities. They are both kleptocrat-run facilities where individuals are held for a specific number of years without their consent, at the mercy of their custodians.

Venitis Law of Education: There is no direct relationship between education and schooling. You might be schooled but uneducated, and you might be educated but unschooled. Schools are concentration camps for the drones of society. Unschooling is much better than schooling. Internet is the best source of knowledge and information, replacing schools, libraries, media, parliaments, and postoffice.

For years, kleptocrats have been doing their best to further blur the distinction by giving public-school officials the same powers as the warden of San Quentin. There are many
abridgments of freedom and invasions of privacy inflicted on children. Children
are looking for a Moses to liberate them from the jails of classes, and lead
them to the promised land of real life.

The socialistic feature of public schooling that dooms it to fail is that at
every level, the system relies on compulsion instead of voluntary consent. The
curriculum is politicized to reflect the socialistic cancer of kleptocrats in
power. Standards are continually dumbed down to the least common denominator.
The brightest children are not permitted to achieve their potential, the
special-needs of individual children are neglected, and the mid-level learners
become little more than socialistic cogs in a kleptocratic machine.

The teachers themselves are constrained by a kleptocratic apparatus that watches
their every move. Kleptocrats have long used compulsory schooling, backed by
egalitarian ideology, as a means of citizen brainwashing and enslavement. In
contrast, a market-based system of schools would adhere to a purely voluntary
ethic, financed with private funds, and administered entirely by private
enterprise.

Generations of dumbing-down and educational indoctrination have brainwashed hoi
polloi. Perhaps citizens will wake up quickly to their peril, perhaps not. They
must be taught the value of freedom. Many do not even know what it is, and many
don't put a value on it. Where the Founders had the advantage of the spread of
Graecoroman ideas, and a population receptive to them, we have the disadvantage
of the decline of those ideas, and a population largely indifferent to or
ignorant of them. This is quite an obstacle.

Schools dumbdown children. It's ridiculous to jail children in schools for
sixteen years! No wonder children revolt violently. Homeschooling is the
education of children at home. Homeschooling is a legal option in many places
for parents to provide their children with a learning environment as an
alternative to publicly-provided schools. Parents cite numerous reasons as
motivations to home school, including better academic test results, poor public
school environment, improved character, and objections to what is taught locally
in public school. It is also an alternative for families living in isolated
rural locations or living temporarily abroad. Homeschooling is legal in many

Unschooling is a curriculum-free philosophy of homeschooling. Unschoolers

allow children to learn through their natural life experiences, including game
play, household responsibilities, and social interaction. Exploring activities
is often led by the children themselves, facilitated by the adults. Child
directed play is a key tenet of the unschooling philosophy.

[BMp] Biomapper results

Hello

I have run biomapper, and now I am trying to interpret the results.

There are two score matrices,

(1)The first with the EGVs

(2)The second with the factors score matrix

I am confused by factor 1 (which I thought was marginality) and factor 2( specialization 25%). In the factors matrix factor 2 is explaining 50%.

How are these two matrix's to be interpreted? How can I tell which EGV(s) the distribution is most influences by. If factor 2 explains more than factor 1, does this mean it is highly specialized?

A definite "must have" book that I picked up so long ago. Maybe that is when amphibians first captured my heart.

Might I be so bold as to suggest the Field Guide to the Animals of
Vernal Pools by Kenney and Burne? Many classroom have sets for the
students to use for vernal pool studies and projects.

I suspect they would be particularly useful for field studies with home
schoolers and they are an inexpensive resource.

Sherk asserts rabblerousers and governments should take immediate action to encourage job creation. Successfully doing so requires understanding why employers create jobs. Businesses and entrepreneurs hire workers to take advantage of opportunities in order to create goods and services that consumers value at a profit. Many government interventions in the economy reduce those opportunities.

Small businesses currently identify taxes, kleptocracy, and government regulations as their most important problems. Businesses are forward-looking and fear that kleptocrats will raise taxes to cover the cost of recent government spending sprees. The economy is struggling forwardagainst the government-applied parking breaks.

Sherk notes rabblerousers and governments can encourage lasting job creation by allowing a better business climate to exist, reemoving barriers to business success and reducing unnecessary costs encourages businesses to hire employees:

* Adopt the pro-growth, job-creating New Flat Tax. The New Flat Tax abolishes the individual income, payroll, capital gains, dividends, estate, and corporate income taxes, replacing them with a simplified, single-rate tax on income after deducting savings (an expenditure tax) of individuals, and a single tax on the domestic net cash flow of businesses. These measures minimize the distortions of the tax code and encourage investment.

* Allow expanded exploration, recovery, transport, and use of fossil fuels. Such developments will enable additional investment in the domestic oil, gas, and coal industries. The additional energy production will also lower energy costs, further benefiting individuals and the economy as a whole.

* Grant free-trade agreement negotiation authority to presidents. Free trade benefits the economies of both trading partners as they realize gains from exchange. Expanding trade negotiating authority will facilitate more trade deals that will promote additional investment and job creation.

* Cut over-regulation of the economy. Government regulations impose a significant burden on businesses, which often have to divert resources from productive investments in order to comply with government mandates. Government agencies should receive parliamentary approval before implementing major new regulations.

* Repeal stupid socialistic acts and prohibit government-mandated project labor agreements. Regulations artificially inflate the cost of government construction projects. By repealing these stupid regulations, the taxpayers could, at the same cost, build more infrastructure, employing hundreds of thousands more workers in the process. http://venitism.blogspot.com

* Reduce political corruption and abolish parliamentary immunity. Greece is the queen of political corruption in Occident. The impunity of the 300 MPs of the Grand Brothel on Syntagma Square is the most freakish thing on Earth. Even though Graecokleptocrats looted many billion euros in kickbacks and churning, not a single Graecokleptocrat has ever gone to jail! Graecokleptocrats are protected by the parliamentary immunity, and nobody can touch them, no matter what. Moreover, they have the nerve to jail dissident bloggers. * Abolish military kickbacks. The largest kickbacks originate in the military industry. Military procurement is a corrupt business from top to bottom. The process is dominated by advocacy, with few checks and balances. Most people in power love this system of doing business and do not want it changed. War and preparation for war systematically corrupt all parties to the state-private transactions by which the government obtains the bulk of its military products. There is a standard 10% kickback to kleptocrats for military purchases.

* Abolish blogbusting. Blogbusters galore! Freak! Freak! Freak! The freakish government of Greece, the most corrupt country in Occident, steals computers! Robbing dissident bloggers and locking them in jail is a freakish behavior that does not belong to the European Union, not even to this galaxy! No wonder some vain Greeks boast they come from Andromeda galaxy!

* Abolish licensure. Licensure is a sign of slavery. All licenses of the kangaroo justice government of Greece should be abolished, including doctors, lawyers, and marriage. The kangaroo government of Greece licensure is an immoral exercise of force, an overly burdensome restraint on trade, a violation of the right to liberty, a mill of kickbacks. Government is a guarantor of liberty and is compatible with liberty only if its range is adequately restricted to the preservation of economic freedom.

* Abolish political mafias. In Greece, there are no real political parties, but political mafias! There are no political leaders, but political godfathers. Any MP who does not kowtow to the godfather automatically is expelled from the mafia. The two main political mafias, Pasok and Nea Democratia, have destroyed Greece and debased the Greek soul.

* Abolish VAT and sales taxes. The imposition of a VAT is the precursor to bigger government. It is simply too easy for kleptocrats to raise a tax that is hidden from citizens. VAT is embedded in the final cost of the goods sold, and is hidden to the consumer. VAT is applied at every stage of consumption, from wholesale to retail. It is passed along until it literally becomes as much an inherent and cloaked component in the price as transportation or raw materials. As a result, countries that have adopted VAT have been sorely tempted to raise the rate over time.

* Abolish charge stacking. The freakish government of Greece uses charge stacking to persecute dissident bloggers. Charge stacking is the ability to charge a large number of overlapping crimes for a single course of conduct. Combining crimes enables prosecutors to get convictions in cases where there is no misconduct at all. By stacking enough charges, including treason, Greek prosecutors jack up the threat value of a trial against a dissident blogger, even if the government's case is very weak. Don't want to just throw them in the dumpster. No recycling at my
