Please never put a handmade quilt in the washing machine. It will most likely destroy it. Local quilt shops can give good recomdations and will have special soaps for sale for washing them which is easiest done in your bathtub

Those products seem to take out more stains and be more natural than an actual stain remover. You could also try asking someone at a fabric/quilt shop what they recommend. There may be some specialty product for this purpose.
