*** Since it is an internal parasite, the meat is ok, just do not eat the liver.. it is up to you if you want to eat the bird depending on the birds condition. Many of them get very unthrifty and stunted/thin.
It is caused by chickens and turkeys running together, with the earthworm being an intermediate host, which injests a worm that starts with the letter "C" (and I can't remember at the moment as I was up until 3 am) and then the poultry eats the earthworms. Chickens are immune to the disease but can cause multiple problems in turkeys, expecially young poults. It is usually fatal though.
I have had turkey toms in the past who fought and they both looked like "Blackhead Disease", but it was not.
