I want to thank everyone for helping me with my question. I love the Great Pyrenees as well. As a matter of fact I've been looking for one for some time so my Shepherd could have a companion. The coyotes where we live in upstate New York don't seem to be hungry enough to come onto the property. We only hear them in a distance, which I am grateful for. However when the time comes and they do venture onto the property I would like to be prepared. Thanks again! Melissa.

Melissa - I am a big fan of Great Pyrenees dogs, as we have had one (and
I'm looking for a new one) and they are remarkable guard dogs. Ours would
stay up allllll night barking, patrolling, guarding, then sleep during the
day. Many times she got between our sheep and a stray dog at great risk to
herself, to protect them. They are bred specifically to protect livestock
and if you are his "family/pack", your family would be protected. I'm not
saying the German Shepherd won't do some good, but a lot of the protection
of livestock that they used to have in them has been bred out through the
years because of the breeders maximizing other traits,...traits that will
benefit the police, seeing eye community, etc. I'm not an expert, but maybe
adding a Pyrenees (or another LGD) might be a good idea. I know when we had
ours we never lost as much as a chicken, let alone a lamb or goat.
Also, I've read that the more you hunt coyotes, the more prolific they
become. I know they are a big problem, but one of the biggest reasons they
begin to head into our territory, is because the animals they regularly hunt
have been reduced or eliminated and they get desperate to eat. I know this
sounds simplistic, but I wonder if good protection (LGD) is a better way to
fight coyotes than trying to kill them all off. That and making sure that
areas they hunt in and animals they would normally eat in the wild are not
carelessly eliminated. Just a thought....

Hey Melissa.
I'm on my acreage on vaca so am very brief. Coyotes travel and hunt in
packs. All people here have 2+ dogs for that reason. One neighbor said he
has to lock up dogs when in heat. He says coyotes line the ridge behind him
howling ALL night!

have four children and want to keep all safe. Thank you so much.

they do come back. A professional trapper named "Matt Jones" has made &
sold
some videos instructing one how to trap coyotes. That may help you.
