You might enjoy the U.P. of Michigan.  Yes, we have a lot of snow, but there are
a lot of farms up here.   We have homes where there are people that live
off-the-grid.  Look up Sue Robishaw (she's an author).  Both herself and husband
(Steve Schmeck?) wrote a book on it.  Land up here is cheap.   A house with 20
acres just went up in auction for $1,000.   Yes, you read that correctly.  
There are a few other homes around here as well that are $70,000 and under.   If
you are interested, email me privately.  I'll get your snail mail and can send
you either the classifieds for homes out of the local papers or real estate
books from this area.
