Both Kalamath Falls, Oregon and somewhere north of San Francisco have geothermal cities and I am sure there are more, or more working on attaining it. The one in Kalamath Falls runs 1,000+ houses, including schools and the hospital and the one in Califoria electricity for 750,000 homes. It costs less than $100 a year to heat these homes.
I know about the Kalamath Falls geothermal as they are using it to even heat greenhouses, which is how I found out about it through friends who live down there.
Not all areas would probably be good for geothermal as it is here, but ambient temperature below ground is usually in the 40-50F range, so even "pre-heating" the air from the ground, VS air temperature when it is sub-freezing will gain you.
