Fixing what we have instead of just replacing it is a great skill to have across the board. I think if we can learn to fix what we have before trying to replace it, we will be better off.
I quilt a little (made some small ones last year for the family) but I am big on repairing things and what is no longer used we make into 'rags' (no paper towels for us!) and we keep all buttons, other attachments and zippers that we can off old clothes. I haven't bought any in years for any of us. I once took old worn woven type blankets and put colorful patches over the holes, sort of a crazy type patch job. They actually looked great as well as unusual and kept us warm.
I know a little about a lot (to me) of things but I am not expert at much...just get by. But I have experience at living very simply without electricity for about a year, hauling water and what ever we needed. I learned to use water and then reuse it again (and if i could figure out a way reuse it yet again before flushing it down. I am training my children the best I can. Keeping warm, (I find keeping cool harder and I live in Florida!)I can deal with small emergencies (got trained by St. John's Ambulance while in Australia some years ago. Kind of like pre-Medic. I know how to splint, suture and deliver a child. Things that where i live are frowned upon so I do not do them, but I could if I had too. Took the Community Emergency Management Team (CERT) training with my husband and oldest son years ago. It is good to look at what you can learn from the government for free before the sh*t hits.
There is so much i still need to learn and I really would like to move from Florida but it is late in the game so I am looking while preparing to stay, kind of trying to cover both scenarios.
Hear I go again. I sometimes talk too much. Just keep working at it Dave and Paula, you are on the right track.
