provide good approaches and guidance

Klemm, et al, 1990. Macroinvertebrate Field and Laboratory Methods for
Evaluating the Biological Integrity of Surface Waters. US EPA - available on
line and print copies may be available (?)
Olson et al. 1997. Sampling Amphibians in Lentic Habitats. Northwest Fauna
Number 4, Soc. for Northwestern Vertebrate Biology is a good source -
specific to amphibs, but applicable to macroinverts.
Heyer et al, 1994. Measuring and Monitoring Biological Diversity: Standard
Methods for Amphibians. Smithsonian Institution Press.
Here's an interesting site with links to a number of different resources:

This is a good overview with useful links:

On plants:
Kent and Coker, 1992. Vegetation description and analysis: A practical
approach. Belhaven Press, London.
A couple of better, and simple wetland plant field guides:
Magee, Dennis. 1981. Freshwater Wetlands: A Guide to Common Indicator Plants
of the Northeast. University of Massachusetts Press, Amherst.
Tiner, R.W. Field Guide to Nontidal Wetland Identification. Looks to be
available through the Institute for Wetland & Environmental Education &
Research, Inc. Check http://www.wetlanded.com/Publications.cfm?OrderID=33600
The Newcomb's Wildflower Guide is great.
Much of this is sort of old, but I hope some of it is useful.
