I read the link you posted earlier, and wonder if they actually SAW the deer browsing the ginseng plants, or ASSUMED it was deer browsing when they saw the ginseng plants cropped off? The reason I wonder this, is because I've known several ginseng gatherers and one of their techniques is to pinch off the tops of small ginseng plants so that greedy folks won't dig the little ones. Lest you think this stunts the growth of the plant, it probably doesn't since it is illegal to dig the roots until fall anyway ... AFTER the seeds have formed. (Disclaimer ... I only know about WV rules, so if the digging dates are different in your state, please don't tell me how wrong I am. I'm getting a bit tired of that.)
And, here in my part of WV, last winter decimated the deer populations. All spring, we found many deer carcasses of deer that have starved to death, and this fall, we aren't seeing very many on our property to hunt. My oldest son has not failed to get a buck on the first day of deer season since he was about 10yo, until this year. Today is the last day of a two week season, and as of this morning, he hasn't gotten one yet. ACK!!!
The last thing we need is more predators introduced into our forests. We didn't want the coyotes that some brainiac thought we needed (that are now killing the deer & turkeys), and we certainly don't need wolves, nor any more cougars (and yes, there are cougars/mountain lions/panthers in WV, regardless of what the DNR may tell you ... I've seen them right here on my property). The farmers here have a hard enough time without the problems that farmers near Yellowstone are getting from introduced wolves, too.
And, while I'm on a roll here, don't believe what anti-trappers will tell you about cruelty in trapping animals for their pelts. Left alone, furbearing animals will instead get rabies, die a truly horrible death, and cause health problems for humans, too. Just so you know....
