I have had a feeling about getting prepared. I just started researching food
storage and how to do that also making my own soaps, candles, detergent and
other things. I just spoke with my husband about starting a garden in the spring
and he tells me I'm overreacting but I have this overwhelming need to be
prepared and I will follow my instincts on this. I live near cities and have
spoken to other people who do feel the same way

Yes, I've felt that urgency, too. I guess we've been minor
preppers/homesteaders for years. But just this year I've felt concerned about
our neighbors, so I'm helping them get their food storage. Lots of people have
the feeling that something is coming down, here in my rural area. But I think
the folks in the cities tend to be rather oblivious.

We, too, need to enclose our porch. We have a Heartland Oval wood cook
stove, but no where to put it yet. We began remodeling here when we
moved in 4 years ago...but started with the living room and worked our
way around. In hindsight, we should have started in the kitchen/dining
area.We have bedrooms now, but have stopped at the kitchen area. I was
afraid to let him tear it out and the money run out and not be able to
put it back together again! LOL So, we have stopped temporarily. We had
intended to enclose that porch, which is half way done, in glass, to see
the mountains. We have some stuff here, but no money to buy the rest of
it to get it finished. If all else fails, we can set the stove up out
there anyhow, just won't have it enclosed all the way.
Somehow, time sneaked up on us. Then everything began to tighten down.
OT was plentiful, then non existent. Hubby is getting OT again, but we
are socking that against everything else to try to get back out of debt
again. We were there, and then found other stuff to do, now we have to
back out again. Always something when ya have a farm..or anything for
that matter! We have been bought fencing materials, posts and mesh,
and lots of other things to do IF the grid goes...we could at least have
some things to work on then.
We have a small greenhouse and the raised beds. I also bought a huge
roll of the 4mil plastic and PVC piping to be able to make some cold
frames over all four beds, if we had to. And I am a "seed saver"... so
we have lots of heritage seeds along with some hybrids. I think we could
do ok for a while here....lots of water, no close neighbors.
I just feel my "pucker factor" rise every day....and I realize that not
everyone feels the urgency that I do....but it appears that some do.
Good luck getting your stuff done in time, Nancy...
