Glad you asked the question,
I am an avid garage saler, I used to go EVERY weekend and would spend the money on a good deal. While living in Vegas between '07 and '10 the wife and I were planning our escape to where we are now. I would buy everything I thought I would need when we got here. (W TN) I spent maybe a few hundred dollars over the couple years. After buying our property there was ALOT of work to be done on the house and 10ac.
The things I needed most to get by and fix the place were, in no particular order:
nails,
screws (Drywall and deck mostly),
Hand tools,
Saw horses,
Chainsaws (Several)
extra chains and bars,
OIL,
Gas cans,
Kerosene heater,
Propane tanks,
elec wire of all sized,
Plumbing pipe and some fixtures,
Garden tools,
wheels for wagons, handcarts, etc,
Handcart (Dolly),
Tool box,
ROPE,
Chain,
generator,
Welder,
air compressor,
water jugs,
oil lamps and lamp oil,
lanterns,
Small Coleman gas bottles for lamps,
Extra lamp wicks,
Mantles for lamps,
matches,
newspaper for staring fires, insulation and could make paper crete blocks from them,
Rolls of insulation,
Wood,
Cut firewood,
hammer,
screwgun,
air tools for compressor,
MORE Rope,
MORE Nails and screws,
food,
Extra pressure cookers and canning supplies would be great also.
All of these things I found DIRT cheap at garage sales and auctions and have need each and every one of the items on this list since moving here in NOV this past year. Thats not even 3 months of being here.
My wife, when living in vegas gave me a hard time almost every optther day and certainly every weekend when I would come home with a full truck of various stuff. we had a 4 car garage that could NOT hold one vehicle because it was holding all the stuff I was buying.
After mocing here and fixing three rooms in the house (Completely rehabed the rooms from the floor supports up) and getting over 2 cords of wood cut so far, decidied to let me know VERY HUMBLY admitted she will NEVER give me a hard time again for buying and storing stuff. We have only spent about $100 on stuff to fix the house so far. THAT money was spent on the little things like CPVC fitting and more Deck screws, tape, staples etc.
SO Save it all, you never know when your gonna need it or when someone else may need it and have something you need.
