In case folks are interested in our Amphibian Migrations & Road Crossings project at the Hudson River Estuary Program, I've uploaded a poster presentation from last year's Association of Natural Resource Extension Professionals conference to the Yahoo group files.
The project was started in 2009, and is an effort to harness volunteer energy to locate important crossing areas in the 10 counties along the estuary. In 2009 and 2010, 75 volunteers collected data at about 30 crossings in eight counties. (These are not organized brigades; due to very limited staff time for this project, volunteers participate independently, both for scouting new crossings and assisting amphibians at known crossings.) I'm still going through the data, but the highlights include documentation of nine salamanders species and seven species of frog and toad, with 2,847 live amphibians counted and 1,429 dead.
We hope to integrate the project findings into our current biodiversity outreach and technical assistance for local municipalities on planning and habitat conservation.
