I was going through a marshy VP in Taunton on Tuesday afternoon and was surprised by the activity. The peepers were out in good numbers, with on-and-off again choruses throughout the pool. I started finding wood frogs in decent numbers, and they started a brief chorus shortly before I left. Two spotted turtles were also observed and photographed in the pool along with. The first was male, but I couldn't catch the second. I've only caught male spotted turtles this early in the year, but I'm working with a small sample size.
I went back out on Wednesday to a marshy swamp behind my aunt's house which attracts a ton of peepers. I was surprised to see and hear absolutely nothing, despite better conditions (it was warmer and raining) and being less than .5 miles removed from the aforementioned VP. I wonder why the peepers would arrive later to this one pool? Both are shallow and warm and the tree cover is roughly the same. I'm sure there's some reason.
Oh, and found my first snake (eastern garter) of the year yesterday afternoon. Spring is moving along nicely now. =)
