Algae will do that. They incorporate themselves into herbaceous plants,
into fungi (forming lichens), into marine mollusks and into jellyfish
and corals. Clearly, algae are pretty promiscuous in being able to
infuse themselves into a kind of composite organism. I didn't realize
they could do it with vertebrates, but there we are.
