RE: [vernalpool] #s Down in Lexington Too

I just conducted a vernal pool survey today in Charlton and saw fresh
spermatophores and brand new eggmasses, likely 1-2 days old. Looks like
there is still some Ambystoma breeding going on, at least in that part
of the state!

I think it has just been a weird cold spring. No large big night, but a
dribble of salamanders still crossing my road north of Quabbin earlier
this week when it rained. I'll bet there will be more in the next rain.

Nothing more than anecdotal, but yeah, weird spring. I have heard wood
frogs at one pool, on one day, this spring, though I have seen some wf
egg
masses. Salamanders obviously moved in the Fells (Stoneham MA) because
I've
seen some egg masses, but relatively few, and at a number of pools I
could
find nothing despite being obviously good pools. ??
