We saw more spotted salamanders tonight in the small vernal pool near Minuteman Tech at 8 PM, but no congresses. Last night we saw 1 salamander in the small pool, with no spermatophores visible, and at 8 PM tonight we saw maybe 14. But we must have missed the big party. Between 10 PM last night (Monday) and 8 tonight (Tues.), as the males had deposited lots of spermatophores in both lower and upper vernal pools. On the way back from the hilltop pools we checked the smaller pool again at 9 PM. In that time a congress of 20 or so had gathered and we probably saw 10 other spotted salamanders in the pool (plus one large bullfrog). Lots of wood frogs calling but haven't seen large number of eggs yet.
