When I ventured out for a short road cruise in light rain last night (5/15),
I have to admit I was expecting to see mostly green frogs. What a pleasant
surprise to find & cross 13 spotted salamanders (+ 1 dead) - all headed away
from their breeding wetlands, of course - in under an hour, as well as 2
wood frogs, a peeper and a toadlet! A friend of mine crossed 4 spotties the
night before on the same stretch of road.
Spotted salamander eggs have been present in our local pools for at least
two to three weeks at this point, and I can't remember seeing spotties on
the road this late in the year before. Anyone else have any late-season
sightings to share?
Best,
Brett
