I normally read the conversations but today I need imput from the group on a
tricky issue. We live out in the country, on the grid(sad to say), but would
like to start moving away from it. That being said my first big issue is
getting water out of the well without using the electric pump we currently use,
no pun intended. We have a generator but it doesn't take of the situation when
we lose power. So now I need the power of the group, what do you think.

http://www.lehmans.com offers a well bucket that just fits inside the well shaft. It has a flap in the bottom that allows the bucket to fill up, and as you lift it out, the water pressure closes that flap tight.
You can also get a solar powered deep well pump battery backup, but winter of 09 when we lost our power for 32 days, then 2 days on, then back off another 3 weeks, I used the bucket, plus I still have cistern for water backup. I fill with spring water, and another one I fill with rain water for irrigation.
