The reality is that few VPs survive work that occurs within 100-200 feet. As Anthony notes, or suggests, work at far greater distances can also spell the end of what had been a robust environment. Much depends on adjoining topography, but groundwater direction, movement and surface hydrology play key roles. Most permitting analysis only addresses horizontal setback distances, whereas considerations should be much more complex as nature itself is dynamic... We know this intuitively but often find our hands tied by regulations that allow work at close distances.
