Since I have rabbits the oats that grow in my garden are a great source of fresh green rabbit food. I don't actually put the straw directly on the garden. I feed the hay to the rabbits and then rake up their manure and what ever they spill that the geese & ducks don't clean up under the rabbit cages. This I apply directly to garden beds and around the fruit trees in the orchard. Since I've been doing this for the last 2 years the orchard has a beautiful carpet of oat grass [when we have rain, which has been in short supply this year] that the geese keep nicely mowed. In my garden beds I just wait until the oat grass is about 6"-8" long and take a basket and harvest, shake off any dirt, and viola! Instant Bunny Food :)
