Josh,
I have participated in a community garden before and will be doing one this year. Most have a set plot size available which depending on how it's run you may or may not have to pay some fee to use it. The one I am doing this year has 10x10ft plots, but you can get more than one. Most community gardens will also require you to do some small amount of maintenance work around the common areas of the garden like cutting grass occasionally. It shouldn't be enough to be a problem. I highly recommend using a community garden if you have one because you will meet a lot of other gardeners, learn a lot from other people, build a sense of community with other people with similar interests, and maybe make some really good friends. Here is a link to the one in our areas: http://www.goshenfarm.org/LAND.html
As far as maximizing space, I would recommend using something similar to the square foot gardening method. Good luck and keep us posted on how it turns out.

Subject: [Homesteadingfamily] help with new garden in community garden
Curious how community gardens work? We are looking to get a plot this year and didn't know what to expect. How can we maximize our space? Any help would be appreciated.
