Through new stupid EU legislation adopted today by the European Council, Europe establishes stronger regulations to fight illegal arms trafficking. It establishes requirements for exports, imports and transit licensing, and makes it easier to track weapons, therefore driving gun commerce underground.
In Greece, the most corrupt country in Occident, only police and criminals own guns. This means citizens cannot protect themselves from criminals and Graecokleptocrats, who abuse them on a consistent basis. If dissident bloggers had guns, they would have blown the brains of cybercops in thin air when they break in their homes and rob their computers and files.
The Council claims the illegal firearms' trade generates about €180 million per year globally. This amount reflects only part of the real threat posed by arms trafficking which often involves other serious crimes such as drug trafficking, human trafficking, and corruption.
The Greek phrase Molon labe, Come and get them, is a classical expression of
defiance spoken by King Leonidas in response to Persian King Xerxes's demand
that the Spartans surrender their weapons at the Battle of Thermopylae. Molon
labe is now the official slogan of gun owners.
At Thermopylae, one million Persians lost twenty thousand men, yet they failed
to disarm three hundred Spartans. Fifty million lawful Americans would resist

Welcoming today's adoption in the Council, Commissioner Malmstroem said: Trafficking in firearms is a threat to the security of our citizens and is a lucrative business for organised crime. I am therefore particularly glad that the European Parliament and Council has approved the Commission's proposal to tighten the rules for exports and imports of firearms and to improve traceability. Stronger control of firearms entering or leaving the EU will help us prevent their misuse.
To avoid unnecessary administrative burdens, the Regulation sets up simplified procedures for temporary export, import and transit of small numbers of firearms for verifiable lawful purposes, such as recreational, repair or exhibition.
The new stupid legislation improves the tracing and control of imports and exports of civilian firearms from and to the EU territory (firearms intended for military purposes are governed by other rules). It brings EU legislation in line with stupid Article 10 of the UN Firearms Protocol, allowing its ratification by the European Union which has been pending since 2002.
The Libertarian Party (LP) asserts that gun ownership, by itself, harms no other
person and cannot morally justify criminal penalties. Libertarians agree with
the majority of Americans who believe they have the right to decide how best to
protect themselves, their families and their property. Millions of Americans
have guns in their homes and sleep more comfortably because of it. Studies show
that where gun ownership is illegal, residential burglaries are higher. A man
with a gun in his home is no threat to you if you aren't breaking into it.
Only an armed citizenry can be present in sufficient numbers to prevent or deter
violent crime before it starts, or to reduce its spread. Interviews with
convicted felons indicate that fear of the armed citizen significantly deters
crime. A criminal is more likely to be driven off from a particular crime by an
armed victim than to be convicted and imprisoned for it. Thus, widespread gun
ownership will make neighborhoods safer.
Libertarians note that rather than banning guns, the politicians and the police
should encourage gun ownership, as well as education and training programs. A
responsible, well-armed and trained citizenry is the best protection against
domestic crime and the threat of foreign invasion. America's founders knew that.
It is still true today.
