Greetings from up north. Checked some baseline pools last night
(mid-upper 60sF) and recorded first calling activity from central Maine
(near Winslow-Waterville). Wood frogs and spring peepers were at full
chorus. Mostly male WFs in the pool proper, but a few pairs in amplexus,
and more females observed and heard actively migrating in from forest
floor. No WF eggs observed yet and no salamanders or spermatophores.
Snow is gone from the forest floor but pools still have ~5-10% ice
cover. Coyotes serenading in the distance.
From these and other observations forwarded to me from southern Maine it
seems we are so far running ~2-3 weeks ahead of "average" vernal pool
phenology in 2012.
