Spotted salamanders, wood frogs and peepers in Lexington MA. Went out Friday at 9 PM with no rain and found lots of spermatophores and a fair number of salamanders, but no real congresses. One salamander egg mass! Water is pretty low.
I'm wondering how long it takes for males to congress and produce spermatophores from start to finish? Could this have happened between 7 and 9 PM or was it Thursday night with the ground barely damp?
In any case I missed the party, but it was good to see critters.
Happy spring.
