RE: [vernalpool] big pickerel frog chorus

Interesting, we have been doing surveys at Montezuma NWR and during the last
survey several spots had leopard frogs calling for the first time.
No American toads have been heard, peepers are back into full chorus, the
salamander congress has come and long gone [almost three weeks early]. We
have not heard any pickerel frogs, however we have heard Western Chorus frog
in several spots and possible a few Gray Tree frogs.

I was out setting turtle traps till late Monday eve and lots of froggies
were calling in Concord, MA. Quite good good spring peeper choruses, lots
of American toads, a few gray treefrogs, and many pickerel frogs - the
first day that I've heard this species this year.

The toads are interesting as they were calling during the hot days of
mid-March and have been silent for a month. This is a second burst of
activity for them - an explosive breeding species that usually breeds in
ONE short time period. I don't recall anything like that in my memory with
toads here before. Peepers too have been mostly silent for the past month
but are loud again. Female peepers can double clutch in some parts of their
range, perhaps they are doing so here this year in part.

The leopard frogs, however, are clearly done. They called loudly for about
a week in mid-March at Great Meadows, several weeks earlier than usual and
are now essentially quiet.
