Woo hoo! Rain in Foxborough and Holliston!
Loads of spring peepers ccalling last night in "my" Holliston vernal pool.
I find it interesting that Mother Nature decided to change my vernal pool workshop plans (which will be in Foxborough tomorrow at 10:00 at the Cocasset River Park on Mill Street).
The vernal pool that I chose for my program (last winter) had been full of fairy shrimp and then wood frog tadpoles last year, but this year it is almost dry! In addition (probably because it is surrounded by various types of development), it now looks awful: very tannic, covered in an oily film, with loads of mosquito larvae, and no sign of fairy shrimp or wood frog tadpoles.
So... I'll be starting at that pool and using Mother Nature's "teaching opportunity" to ask workshop attendees: "why do you think this pool isn't doing very well in this drought?"
After briefly visiting this pool, we will move to the vernal pool I used last year (just down the road) which is surrounded by pristine forest/conservation land. Its water level, surprisingly enough, is not all that low (located at a low point in the forest, water levels are most likely fed by groundwater) and it is still in beautiful condition (clear water, high invertebrate and wood frog tadpole populations and at least 100 spotted salamander egg masses).
'Ain't Mother Nature amazing?!
