Gleaners is a Self Help Group that is a part of your local food bank~
There are gleaner groups all over the US~
What we do, we go to stores and such and pick up donations of bread,
pastries and other goodies (fruits veg meat "extra") this is then
supplemented by purchasing food from our food bank, and getting free food
from the bank as well.
in the summer/fall we do in field gleans. We are lucky here to have a huge
agricultural school where we get to pick berries, beans, corn apples and
other stuff. We also do Wood gleans for people who heat their home with
wood.
When we do field gleans, the person working gets to keep HALF Of everything
they pick, the other half is distributed between the adoptees (disabled
people who cant go on gleans)
There is a certain ammt of hours volunteered per family that is required,
unless you are an adoptee. and we even get them coming and helping if they
are able.
each group and state and even county are different. but honestly, to find
out about them contact your local or state food bank.
It is run on state income requirements. So not everyone will qualify~
