Was hoping for a "big night" last night, but the rain stopped well before dark. Temp exactly 42 degrees at 9pm. Many Wood Frogs moving, and a few Spring Peepers. But, no calling in the pools, except for an occasional rare peep. Many dead frogs on the road. But, no Spotted Salamanders seen at all--none on the roads, alive or dead, and none in the pool by the house.
Wood Frogs were first heard calling in our pool during the afternoon of 4/2 (one individual), and a small chorus by afternoon of 4/3. None present on 4/1 (or earlier); we had about 4 inches of snow that morning, though much of that melted within 24 hours. We don't always get to know exactly which day the Wood Frogs start, because of work etc., but this year we were lucky.
Happy Hunting!
