A few weeks ago, we had a small movement of amphibians and last night we
had a modest, but steady movement of spotted salamanders, spring peepers
and red efts. We closed the street from 8pm - midnight. We had a heavy
shower at 8pm that seemed to spark the salamanders, but the rain stopped
after about 15 minutes. About 6 spotted salamanders were observed
migrating back from the pools to the forest.
Its difficult to estimate numbers along the stretch of road - during
this time roughly 75 spotted salamander; 150 spring peepers and about
12 red efts. Spring peepers and wood frogs were quite vocal in the
wetlands. A few flying squirrels were heard as well.
We also lead an educational walk at 9pm. About 30 folks joined us, and
it was one of the more enjoyable experiences. Everyone was so excited
and filled with questions and awe. They stayed out until almost 11pm.
There were great questions asked and great conversations. It was really
inspiring to see everyone's interest.
Traffic ceased at 11pm and the wind picked up. I don't know how many
more crossed throughout the night. Midnight was as late as we could
stay out. We'll check the roads again tonight, though I'm not sure what
the conditions will be.
