Tuesday night, beginning at about 8 pm, on Peaks Island off the coast of
Maine, I observed a couple of dozen yellow spotted salamanders
congressing in one of my favorite vernal pools. The rain had stopped,
and it was about 37-38 degrees out- they seemed to be moving somewhat
slowly compared with other times I've observed. I heard one wood frog
call just a couple of times. A friend told me that the "frogs were
going crazy in the swamp" near his house a couple of miles from where I
was. I'll go there tonight.
It's fun but a little torturous to watch this listserv light up each
spring- beginning w/ our southern friends in February! This year's
action is a little early for us in Maine but we'll happily take it!
