My husband and I went out last night to see if we could help a few
salamanders escape a nasty fate on their way to their breeding pool. We
were only out for an hour in the fog and mist and assisted 7 spotted
salamanders across the road. This is the first migration activity we
have seen this year. We checked out one vernal pool which is usually
quite active and did not find any salamanders or egg masses. In fact,
there were very few wood frogs on the road which is surprising because
for the 15 years we have been patrolling we usually find more wood frogs
than salamanders. We have not heard the wood frogs chorus in any of the
pools here either.
