Not as much activity on my road survey in Northborough tonight as I had hoped. Even though we had warmer temps (48-52F) and a steady rain (rather than just fog) compared to last Monday, numbers of salamanders on the move were similar between nights. However, almost all of the salamanders were LEAVING the wetlands this time. Curiously, I saw only a few wood frogs (maybe they left the pools earlier?).
New critters on the road relative to last week were redback salamanders and lots of American toads. The evening was capped off by a large chorus of leopard frogs in a portion of the swamp/marsh complex adjacent to the road I was surveying.
I also found a number of blue-spotted salamander egg masses in Westborough earlier today . . . things are moving along.
