Dear Melanie,
If the coyotes are using your property as their "base" you will find the
area they use to lay in during the day. If you see a coyote moving during
the day, BEWARE, it could have rabies. Same goes for Opossums and skunks.
If you are going to get goats, you can either get great Pyrenees, donkeys,
or llamas to protect your herd. Beware of killing all the coyotes around
you, they kill rats and mice, and you could be overrun. We have coyotes
around us in Texas, but they are more afraid of us than we are of them.
Some of our neighbors killed a lot of coyotes one year and we were overrun
with mice for 2 years. We actually have more trouble with wild dogs, which
are not afraid of people. Opossums, will also kill cats and chickens. We
have more trouble with them than coyotes also.
Hope this helps, I've been living in rural NE Texas for 20 years now, there
is always something new to learn. We have dairy goats and keep llamas to
protect them, haven't lost one yet.
I have lost lots of chickens, because I free range them, and usually lose
them to dogs. If you are going to raise chickens do beware of snakes. They
love eggs and can get in almost anywhere.
Good luck and have fun!
Judy
