If you are only raising laying hens for a few eggs, nothing could be more simple. If you want 40 organic eggs a week you will need about 10 hens. Organic farming is not that difficult if you are farming small numbers - what you feed the chickens is important, and you will need to grow some of the chickens food on the property where you are raising the home chickens. The hens will need to have a nice large space outside. Free range chicken framing- 1000 birds per hectare (10 000 square meters in a hectare) – means 10 square meters per chicken. This is outdoor space. Free range poultry – perching space - 30cm to 45cm for each bird - free range with nest boxes – 1 nest box bay per 4-5 hens. The poultry equipment you will need is tube feeder and a 4 liter font – and a small chicken coop. that's it! Not expensive at all. You can feed your hens from your vegetable garden and with table scraps – avoid avocado pear and cabbage – these inhibit
egg laying – otherwise just about any food goes – if they have lots of outdoor room to forage the chickens will eat grubs, worms, snails and most small beasties found in a garden. You will need to give them some commercial food – just remember that many commercial chicken feeds are supplemented with non organic components – ask you supplier. Growing organic eggs at home can be a great way to supplement your diet – you know what you are feeding your organic hens – that means you know what you are eating.
