Re: [vernalpool] Effects of Open Pit Mining on Vernal Pools 100 feet away

Typically, any work that alters the groundwater or hydrology--particularly within 100-150-ft--will negatively impact a VP. An open pit mine that close sounds like trouble and my own opinion is that, if permitted, such work would simply destroy the VPs and any trout habitat. We pretend otherwise, but the harsh truth is that only the most extraordinary mitigation (& I can't imagine what that could be) could protect resources that close.

Subject: [vernalpool] Effects of Open Pit Mining on Vernal Pools 100
feet away

I am looking for some documented information on the effects that open
pit mining has on vernal pools. There has recently been an application
submitted in my town of Waterford, Ct. This project will be about 100
feet from 2 vernal pools, wetlands and a native trout brook. The plan is
to blast a 7 acre site to a depth of 50 -60 feet and then have a
permanent rock processing facility located there. There is a group of
residents who are fighting this proposal, which is currently in review
by the Conservation Commission. Any information would be greatly
appreciated.
