Aly: Since many vernal ponds owe their existence to a confining layer (such as a localized clay lens) situated below the surface that serves to which retard/prevent the downward movement of water, any nearby activity which compromises or destroys the confining layer can have a disastrous
effect as it provides a pathway for the percolation of water.
