I guess the first step to weed down you list is finding out what won't last in you area (weather wise) and considering how weird the weather has been so far this year, I WISH YOU BIG TIME LUCK!

I'm not new but have been lurking. This will be my first attempt at growing mostly vegetables and, due to a number of factors, I'll be growing them in containers. I've read some great books (by Edward Smith of VT, Pamela Crawford of GA, and a duo for "Bountiful Containers") but these are people who have a lot of experience. My gardening experience has been ornamentals so I'm not sure if I'll have a green thumb with veggies or not.
My focus is on organic (healthy) and cost (frugality). This is going to be a costly year in that I'm setting up the containers, but I also have a "wish list" that I'm having difficulty paring down. To limit disappointment (not liking a variety, losing some to bugs/disease) I want to plant a number of different varieties, and that is where I start to get into trouble. How do you decide what varieties to try? How many of each variety do you plant?
I'm in AL.
Thanks for any suggestions,
Lily

Re: [Homesteadingfamily] help with new garden in community garden
Josh,
I have participated in a community garden before and will be doing one this year. Most have a set plot size available which depending on how it's run you may or may not have to pay some fee to use it. The one I am doing this year has 10x10ft plots, but you can get more than one. Most community gardens will also require you to do some small amount of maintenance work around the common areas of the garden like cutting grass occasionally. It shouldn't be enough to be a problem. I highly recommend using a community garden if you have one because you will meet a lot of other gardeners, learn a lot from other people, build a sense of community with other people with similar interests, and maybe make some really good friends. Here is a link to the one in our areas: http://www.goshenfarm.org/LAND.html
As far as maximizing space, I would recommend using something similar to the square foot gardening method. Good luck and keep us posted on how it turns out.

Curious how community gardens work? We are looking to get a plot this year and didn't know what to expect. How can we maximize our space? Any help would be appreciated.

[kitchencabinetforum] HEROIC IRISH WILL EXPRESS THEIR INDIGNATION AGAINST FOURTH REICH
Heroic Irish, who have twice voted No to Fourth Reich treaties, will get another chance to express their indignation against the yoke of Fourth Reich with a referendum on a fiscal compact on budget discipline agreed last month. Premier Enda Kenny declares the Irish will be asked for their authorization in a referendum to ratify the European stability treaty. http://venitism.blogspot.com
Eurokleptocrats tried to frame the treaty to avoid the need for a referendum, which Ireland has to hold on any major transfer of power to Brussels. But unlike full EU treaties this inter-governmental accord does not require unanimity. It enters into force once 12 states have ratified it.
Fourth Reich was not initiated on March 25, 1957 in Rome, but on August 10, 1944 in Strasbourg! Fourth Reich originates from the Red House Report, a detailed account of a secret meeting at the Maison Rouge Hotel in Strasbourg, a couple of blocks from today's Eldorado of Prostitutes (EP), on August 10, 1944. There, Nazi officials instructed an elite group of German industrialists to plan for Germany's post-war recovery, prepare for the Nazis' return to power, and work for a strong Fourth Reich.
The three-page, closely typed report, marked Secret, copied by British spies and sent to the US Secretary of State, detailed how the industrialists were to work with the Nazi Party to rebuild Germany's economy by sending money through Switzerland. They would set up a network of secret front companies abroad, wait until conditions were right, and then grab power with various hoodwinking treaties.
Jean Monnet, founding father of Fourth Reich, says in a letter to a friend on April 13, 1952: Europe's nations should be guided towards the super-state without their people understanding what is happening. This can be accomplished by successive steps, each disguised as having an economic purpose, but which will eventually and irreversibly lead to federation.
A sensitive issue cannot be fully explained in a post, but only in a speech, in that magic eyeball to eyeball contact, baring my soul, and declaring truths that cause shock and awe. That's why I look forward to the invitation of your organization to speak at your conference. Basil Venitis, venitis@gmail.com
You remember this quip from former Obama Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel during the financial crisis: You never want a serious crisis to go to waste. What matters to statists is that they see an opportunity in a pseudocrisis to shape public perception and manipulate public opinion. The financial crisis yielded a government takeover of the financial sector. The healthcare pseudocrisis yielded a government takeover of the healthcare system. What do you think Eurokleptocrats are going to do with the crisis of PIGS? Venitis points out they'd be happy to transform the confederation of Fourth Reich to a federation. You should take the blood libel seriously. http://venitism.blogspot.com
There are events in history known as false flag events. These are staged by a government usually to distress the public, so the government can do something that the public would otherwise disapprove. The name is derived from the military concept of flying false colors; that is flying the flag of a country other than one's own. Lyndon Johnson's phony Gulf of Tonkin pseudoevent started the Viet Nam War in 1964. This was deemed necessary to begin a full scale war with public approval and is now well documented as a false flag event. It never happened. Venitis points out that now PIGS are the false flag to transform the confederation of Fourth Reich to a federation.
Romano Prodi points out Europe has always become stronger through crises. But the next Europe will look different. There will be some states that will collaborate ever more intensely. And there will be states that, step by step, will claim more exceptions for themselves and will be looking for something like a Europe a la carte, a multiple speed Europe. The core of Europe will take more and more decisions together, while the others will be more and more on the rim of it.
I consider the European Union null and void confederation, because Europeans did not vote for any constitutional treaty! Eurokleptocrats pulled off the biggest powergrab in history by imposing a camouflaged constitution, bypassing all nonos. The Nazi dream for Europe was finally fullfilled - ein Volk, ein Reich, ein Fuehrer - one people, one empire, one leader.
The Lisbon Treaty is Eurokleptocracy's Pyrrhic victory. It created a confederation, Fourth Reich, without a popular foundation. EU lacks legitimacy among Europeans. Eurokleptocrats created a situation where the citizens of slave States live their lives with a resigned feeling that the EU project is not their own.
Fourth Reich is an illegal confederation that has no voted constitution, a flag no one salutes, an anthem no one sings, a Fuehrer no one can name, a parliament of prostitutes, a capital of huge bureaucracy no one controls, a currency that soon will not exist, rules of fiscal behavior that no member has been penalized for ignoring, a commission which is the Eldorado of corruption, brutal cybercops, and kleptocrats galore! Ode to Joy is the anthem of Fourth Reich. It is based on the final movement of Beethoven's 9th Symphony, and it's used without lyrics. http://venitism.blogspot.com
Fourthreichian monetary and fiscal unification is the Trojan horse for overall harmonization of economic rules, policies, and laws in Fourth Reich. Any eurozone problem is interpreted as a consequence of the lack of harmonization and leads to another wave of a creeping harmonization. Fuehrer Merkozy frequently declares that coordinating tax policies and labor laws is not just about currency issues but also about political cooperation, which has to be deepened. In other words, more enslavement to Brussels, transforming the confederation to a federation!
Smart words are more effective than smart bombs! Mighty words of a charismatic keynote speaker can transform your people to a new dimension of organizational climate, efficiency, self-actualization, enthusiasm, belonging, and motivation. I would like very much to speak at your conference in order to explain critical points much further. Basil Venitis, venitis@gmail.com
Nullification is the right of a member country of a federation to nullify any federal law which that state has deemed unconstitutional. Because the sovereign countries formed the federation, they hold the final authority regarding the limits of the power of the federal government. The member countries and not the Federal Bench are the ultimate interpreters of the extent of the federal government's power. Nullification grants the right to secession, by which a country terminates its political affiliation with the federation. Fourth Reich violates nullification on a consistent basis.
Nullification declares that member countries of a federation must judge the constitutionality of the acts of their agent, the federal government, since no impartial arbiter between them exists. When the federal government exercises a particularly dangerous power not delegated to it, the countries must refuse to allow its enforcement within their borders. Nullification defies the unexamined premise of the entire political spectrum, according to which society must be organized with a single, irresistible power center issuing infallible commands from the top. http://venitism.blogspot.com

I didn't see any amphibians during two passes along a bellwether road in Northborough, MA (38 degrees, steady rain), but I did hear of some amphibian movements in Easton at the same time (~7:00 PM).

[kitchencabinetforum] A BORDER IS NOT A BARRIER
Fuehrer Merkozy does not understand the function of borders. A border is not
properly a barrier for the purpose of keeping foreigners out; it is properly a
boundary designating the area in which the government must protect rights.
Rights-respecting foreigners who want to cross that boundary in order to enjoy
the relative freedom and abundant opportunity in a country have a moral right to
do so. http://venitism.blogspot.com
Three Member States are still making it too difficult for highly skilled people to come and work in the EU, prompting the Commission to act. Despite having been warned in July 2011, Austria, Cyprus and Greece have not yet transposed the rules of the Blue Card Directive, which should have been implemented before 19 June 2011. This is why the European Commission today issued reasoned opinions (Article 258 TFEU) requesting Austria, Cyprus and Greece to bring their laws into line with EU legislation.
Citizens who want to associate with foreigners in rights-respecting ways,
whether through friendship, romance, recreation, or commerce, have a moral right
to do so. And citizens who do not want to associate with foreigners have a moral
right not to associate with them. But no one, including the government, has a
moral right to prevent anyone from acting on his judgment.
The EU Blue Card Directive puts in place common and efficient rules that allow highly skilled people from outside Europe to come and work in our labour markets, filling gaps that cannot be filled by EU nationals. It establishes a fast-track admission procedure for these foreigners and ensures a common set of social and economic rights, such as equal treatment with nationals as regards working conditions and pay, as well as access to goods and services.
If Europe is to secure economic prosperity, remain competitive and maintain its welfare systems, it needs immigrant workers. The current economic and financial crises makes this need all the more pressing, while highlighting the need for common rules and a comprehensive and balanced EU migration policy.
Open immigration does not mean that anyone may enter the country at any location
or in any manner he chooses; it is not unchecked or unmonitored immigration.
Open immigration means that anyone is free to enter and reside in a country,
providing that he enters at a designated checkpoint and passes an objective
screening process, the purpose of which is to keep out criminals, terrorists,
enemies of the country, and people with certain kinds of contagious diseases.
Such a policy is not only politically right; it is morally right.
The Blue Card Directive (Directive 2009/50/EC) was adopted on 25 May 2009 and Member Sates had until 19 June 2011 to transpose its provisions into national law. All EU Member States except Denmark, the UK and Ireland are bound by the Directive.
If worldwide immigration were to be even slightly loosened, this would help the
global economy. Over time we would all become richer. The best way to raise
global wealth is a free flow of people and products, to tear down all borders. http://venitism.blogspot.com
The EU Blue Card scheme helps attract highly qualified migrants to Europe, supporting Member States' and EU companies' efforts to fill gaps in their labour markets that cannot be filled by their own nationals, other EU nationals or legally resident non-EU nationals. It provides a common and simplified procedure applicable in the EU Member States bound by the Directive and ensures that potential migrants know what they need to do, whichever Member State they are planning to go to, rather than having to face 24 different systems.
Once a Member State grants a Blue Card to a migrant, after two years that person can then benefit from free access to highly qualified employment positions in that Member State and can also move to another EU Member State where their skills may be needed. Coupled with preferential rules for acquiring long term resident status and for family reunification, the Blue Card scheme presents an attractive package to potential highly qualified migrants.
