Subject: [vernalpool] activity
We went out to our pool at about 4am. The temp was in the low 50's. We
heard the wood frogs from the distance and it became quite loud as we got
close. As we approached the side of the pool the constant sound quieted to
only an occasional chirp. We had not yet turned on our flashlight, but by
the much reduced sound level the wood frogs knew that we were there.
When we turned on our light we observed many wood frogs, some in groups,
some floating, some on the bottom. We also saw many salamanders, mostly
spotted, some times 3 or 4 at a time, and some others that were smaller and
appeared solid in color. We also saw Marbled larva swimming.
Two nights ago with the temp in the upper 30's @ about 9:30 pm we saw the
slight movement once, under the submerged leaves, aside from that nothing.
There has been no rain here for about a week. Our location is in eastern NY
near Great Barrington.
