Wow, thanks for such a thorough accounting of activity in and around
your pool! Were you able to ascertain whether the spotted salamanders
you've observed are mostly males?

Subject: [vernalpool] Spotted on the move in and wood frogs seem to
be moving out
Sent by: vernalpool@yahoogroups.com
I came up with 58 spotted salamanders in one of my pools along with just
a couple dozen wood frogs either seen or heard. Seems the CT wood frogs
also came and went within just a few days rather than the week plus of
the past couple years. Spring peepers are still deafening but no gray
tree frogs. One adult green frog was in the pool along with many
tadpoles. Yesterday I found a pair of adult newts mating in the pond.
Marbled salamanders are still present as numerous larvae but I'm waiting
to see how many survive to adulthood.
Temps are in the low 70's with just a very light mist so far today. I'm
hoping there will be some actual rain by the weekend.(Rain dance time!)
The edges of the irregularly shaped pool are receding leaving island
habitats among the logs and hummocks which will soon be easily
accessible through the muck. Raccoon and deer have been visiting and
there are many bird droppings amoung the fallen leaves. There are great
horned owls, barred owls, red-shouldered hawks, red-tailed hawks, and
mallards among others in the nearby areas.
Happy Spring!
