Hi,
congrats on your new expansion. I have raised both Meat and Dairy Goats and I would suggest that you look at the Lamancha Breed as well as Nubian for having laid back personalities (less likely to be escape artists) The Alpine Breeds are just that Mountain goats:) Nigerian dwarf is the other small breed that is a milker but you have to raise a few of these to support a family with their milk and meat:)
Good Luck on your farming adventure,
Sandra

Hi y'all. I am new to the group and fairly new to the whole idea of homesteading. We have begun our journey with a small farm now but just purchased an additional 65 acres to really go at this full force (:
We have a small kitchen garden, fruit trees and a small vineyard to start. We also currently raise rabbits and a few chickens for meat and eggs.
My question for the group is about goats. We would like to have a small herd but not sure what kind to start with. I know Nubians are good for meat as well as milk but I had heard of a smaller breed that are more managable and don't try to "escape" as much. They are not Pygmy but something in between the two.
Anyone know what I am referring to? I would love to know more.
Thanks for any input (:
Happy Homesteading,
Laura~
